Paraguay's Juan Carlos Gimenez first challenged for a version of the world Super-middleweight crown against Mauro Galvano in February 1992 (WBC). Two fights later he challenged Chris Eubank in November 1992 in Manchester (WBO). In September 1994 he faced Nigel Benn in Birmingham (WBC). Giminez's final chance at world glory came against Joe Calzaghe in Cardiff in April 1998.
Gimenez was renowned for his toughness. He had been the distance with Roberto Duran and Juan Domingo Roldan before ever challenging for a world title and none of the other champions had managed to stop him.
Calzaghe never gave Gimenez a chance at lasting the distance let alone winning. Round after round the Welshman picked his south American challenger apart until the challenger's corner informed referee Mike Ortega that their charge would not be coming out for the 10th round.
