The fight

Jim Watt, the WBC World Lightweight champion from Glasgow made the third defense of his title against American challenger  Howard Davis Jr on Saturday, June 7, 1980, at Ibrox Park, Glasgow, Scotland. The fight was promoted by Mike Barrett and Mickey Duff and was aired live on the BBC.

Both fighters weighed in before the fight, with Jim Watt weighing 135 lbs, and Howard Davis Jr weighing 134 lbs. The referee for the fight was Carlos Padilla. Despite the pouring rain, a crowd of 15,000 people braved the weather to witness the highly anticipated match.

Going into the fight, Davis was considered the narrow pre-fight favorite. However, he was slow to settle into the fight in front of the passionate Scottish crowd. On the other hand, Watt was always calm and collected, which was reflected in his performance in the ring. He completely dominated the opening half of the bout from his southpaw stance.

Although Davis produced some telling blows in the later rounds, the result was never in doubt. Jim Watt outboxed Davis to win the match by unanimous decision. This was a significant win for Watt as he successfully defended his WBC World Lightweight Title.

The fight was highly lucrative for both boxers, with Watt receiving a $1 million payout and Davis receiving $300,000. Despite the poor weather, the crowd's enthusiasm added to the already intense fight atmosphere. The result of the fight was a great achievement for Jim Watt, who cemented his position as a highly respected boxer.
