Floyd Patterson vs Sonny Liston

On September 25, 1962, boxing turned its attention to Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois, for a bout for the World Heavyweight Title. The defending champion, Floyd Patterson, with a record of 38-2 (29 KOs), faced the formidable challenger Sonny Liston, who entered the ring with a record of 33-1 (23 KOs). Liston was the betting favourite, outweighing Patterson by 24 pounds.

Despite holding the championship, Patterson was cast as the underdog, with betting odds stacked against him at 8-5. This scepticism was a nod to Liston's overwhelming power and intimidating presence in the ring. 

The fight's magnitude was reflected in its broadcast on closed-circuit TV across 264 United States and Canada locations, drawing a live crowd of 18,894 at Comiskey Park. The gate receipts tallied up to $665,420, with Patterson securing 55 per cent of ancillary rights and 45 per cent of the net gate, while Liston was guaranteed 12½ per cent of the net in all revenue phases.

The fight itself was shockingly brief yet memorable. About halfway through the first round, Liston landed a powerful right uppercut that visibly hurt Patterson. Sensing vulnerability, Liston unleashed a barrage of punches, culminating in a devastating left hook that sent Patterson to the canvas. Patterson's attempt to recover was in vain; he reached his knees but failed to beat the referee's ten-count, resulting in a knockout victory for Liston at 2:06 of the first round.

This moment was captured vividly by Gilbert Rogin of Sports Illustrated, who noted that Liston's left hook hit Patterson "like a diesel rig going downhill, no brakes." Rogin's observation underscored the sheer force behind Liston's punch, emphasising that few beings, human or otherwise, could have withstood such a blow. The outcome was a testament to Liston's power and marked a significant shift in the heavyweight division.

The contract for the fight stipulated that if Liston won, he was obligated to give Patterson a rematch within a year, setting the stage for another chapter in their rivalry.
