On April 18, 1969, at the Forum in Inglewood, Jose Napoles captured the world welterweight championship with a systematic dismantling of Curtis Cokes, forcing a 13th-round retirement that ended Cokes' reign. The bout, drawing 15,878 spectators and generating a California indoor record gate of $195,480, marked the culmination of Napoles' five-year wait for a title opportunity.

Despite earning just $20,000 to the champion's $80,000, Napoles, weighing 143 pounds, dominated the 146-pound Cokes. The Cuban exile negated Cokes' two-inch reach advantage through relentless pressure, keeping the champion centre ring per his strategic plan. By the tenth round, Napoles' body attack, mainly left hooks, had visibly affected Cokes.

The scorecards reflected Napoles' supremacy: referee George Latka (11-1), judge John Thomas (10-2), and judge Joey Olmos (11-1). The end came when manager Doug Lord halted the bout after 13 rounds, with Cokes' eyes so swollen he could no longer see to defend himself, though the proud champion wished to continue.
