Azumah Nelson vs Lupe Suarez

Azumah Nelson returned to the ring on June 25, 1988, at the Trump Plaza Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey, to defend his WBC Super Featherweight Title against Mexican challenger Lupe Suarez. The fight, promoted by Don King Productions and televised on CBS Sports, pitted Nelson, with a record of 27-1, against Suarez, who entered the contest at 25-1. Both fighters appeared well-prepared at the weigh-in, with Nelson tipping the scales at 129¼ pounds and Suarez slightly heavier at 130.

From the opening bell, Suarez, a disciplined and technically sound challenger, showed little intimidation despite facing one of the most formidable champions in the division. He used lateral movement and sharp counterpunches to try and disrupt Nelson's rhythm, managing to hold his ground in the early exchanges. Early in the ninth round, Nelson found the decisive opening. A perfectly timed right hand landed cleanly on Suarez's jaw, freezing him momentarily. Nelson immediately followed up with a rapid flurry of punches that sent Suarez crumbling to the canvas. Although the challenger managed to rise to his feet, referee Tony Perez, assessing Suarez's condition, made the call to stop the contest just 27 seconds into the round.

With this victory, Nelson improved his record to 28-1, with 20 of those wins coming by way of knockout. The fight demonstrated once again why Nelson was considered one of the most methodical finishers in the sport. Suarez, whose record now stood at 25-2, earned credit for his resilience and early competitiveness but ultimately fell victim to Nelson's precision and power in the championship rounds.
