On Saturday, June 3, 1978, at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Don King Productions featured Alexis Arguello defending his WBC World Super Featherweight Title against challenger Diego Alcala. This fight marked Arguello's second defense of his title, and the evening's contest was overseen by referee Roberto Ramirez Sr.

The champion, Alexis Arguello, from Managua, Nicaragua, entered the bout with an impressive record of 55-4-0, while challenger Diego Alcala, hailing from La Arena, Chitré, Panama, held a record of 29-10-2. The fighters weighed in at 129 lbs and 130 lbs, respectively.

The fight commenced with Arguello adopting a cautious approach in the initial phase of the opening round. However, the Nicaraguan champion soon found an opportunity to corner Alcala, who struggled to escape.
