Fight Report

In a commanding performance, Skye Nicolson (10-0, 1 KO) outclassed Sarah Mahfoud (14-2, 3 KOs) over ten rounds to claim the WBC featherweight title on Saturday at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas. The bout, part of the undercard for the Richardson Hitchins-Gustavo Lemos main event, was contested over the standard ten two-minute rounds for women's boxing matches.

The judges' scorecards reflected Nicolson's dominance. Two judges scored the fight 100-90, and the third, Steve Weisfeld, awarded Mahfoud a single round for a score of 99-91. In her post-fight interview on the DAZN broadcast, Nicolson expressed her confidence, stating, "I know what I can do, and I want to keep proving that to the rest of the world."

Coming off her first career stoppage victory, Nicolson employed a disciplined and conservative approach. She used her three-and-a-half-inch reach advantage to keep Mahfoud at bay with a stiff jab. Mahfoud struggled to land anything of consequence throughout the fight. Nicolson's superior reach and footwork made the distance between them seem far greater than the official measurements indicated.

Despite Mahfoud's best efforts to close the distance with quick bursts, Nicolson consistently thwarted her attempts by using her jab, sidestepping, or initiating clinches when necessary. The Australian's performance made Mahfoud, a quality fighter in her own right, appear entirely outmatched.

As the fight progressed into the second half, Nicolson grew increasingly confident, pressing forward with hard left hands and taunting Mahfoud with a near-constant grin. In the final seconds of the 10th round, Nicolson showcased her complete control of the fight by wiggling her arms and legs and engaging in some playful showboating.

With this victory, Nicolson now holds a piece of the featherweight title, while Amanda Serrano owns the remaining belts. Serrano recently dropped the WBC title won by Nicolson due to the organisation's refusal to sanction her fights at the same parameters as men's championship bouts, namely 12 three-minute rounds. Nicolson expressed her respect for the WBC's rules but indicated her willingness to face Serrano under the latter's preferred conditions, stating, "If the only way to fight Amanda Serrano is over 12 three-minute rounds, talk to my team. We'll make it happen."
