Terence âBudâ Crawford pulled off one of the most defining wins of his career by defeating SaĂșl âCaneloâ Ălvarez by unanimous decision to become the undisputed super-middleweight champion. The fight, billed as There Can Only Be One, carried mammoth stakes: Alvarez came in defending the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO and The Ring titles, while Crawford moved up two weight classes to challenge. Crawford entered the ring unbeaten at 41-0 (31 KOs); after the fight, that record improved to 42-0 (31 KOs). Alvarez came in with a record of 63-2-2 (39 KOs). Both fighters weighed in at 167œ pounds. Alvarez fought orthodox; Crawford as a southpaw.
From the opening rounds, Crawford imposed a tactical game plan built around movement, feints, and defensive discipline. He was more active with his jab (45 jabs landed out of 326 thrown vs Alvarezâs 16 jabs out of 78) and used distance to frustrate Alvarez, who tried repeatedly to close in and target the body. Alvarezâs strength remained in his power punches: he landed 83 power shots out of 260 thrown, while Crawford landed 70 of 208. Still, Alvarezâs power shots were less effective relative to Crawfordâs overall accuracy.
Throughout the later rounds, Crawford seemed to pull away, especially in rounds 9 through 12. His footwork grew sharper, his counters more precise, and his ring generalship more obvious. Alvarez had momentsâshort bursts where he managed to cut off the ring, landed heavy body shots, or forced exchangesâbut was unable to sustain enough pressure to turn the tide. Spectators noted that despite Alvarezâs champion rĂ©sumĂ© and pedigree, Crawfordâs speed and defensive positioning neutralised many of the typical Canelo strengths.
The judgesâ scorecards confirmed what many watching felt: unanimous decision, with scores of 116-112, 115-113, and 115-113 in favour of Crawford. That margin reflects a tight fight in many rounds, but with Crawford edging enough of them, particularly middle and late. The crowd was massive â over 70,000 spectators, a record for boxing in Las Vegas. The electric atmosphere, with Alvarez backed heavily by Mexican fans and ardent boxing purists hoping to see an upset, only added to the magnitude of the moment.
With this win, Crawford becomes the first male boxer in the four-belt era to be an undisputed champion in three different weight divisions. For Alvarez, this marks only the third loss of his career. Though he loses his undisputed super-middleweight titles, his legacy remains enormous: he has taken risks, fought elite opposition, and again shown why he is among the sportâs greats. Crawford, meanwhile, further cements his standing not only by weight class titles, but by showing adaptability â moving up two divisions and still executing a flawless game plan under pressure.
