Biography

Ahmed Santos, born on February 19, 1974, in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, embarked on a professional boxing career that spanned nearly nine years. His journey began on October 2, 1992, with a four-round draw against Francisco Sandoval in Culiacan. This inaugural bout set the stage for a promising career. Santos won seven consecutive fights, including a second-round knockout of Sandoval in a rematch, again in Culiacán.

Santos's career was marked by several notable bouts against world-class fighters. One of his most significant challenges came on April 22, 1996, when he faced former world title challenger David Sample, losing by a ten-round decision in Tempe, Arizona. Despite this setback, Santos continued to build momentum, winning six of his next eight fights, with two draws. His most notable victory during this period was capturing the IBA light welterweight title on September 10, 1997, with a nine-round knockout of Pete Talliaferro in Las Vegas. However, his reign was short-lived, as he lost the title to Antonio Diaz by a twelve-round decision later that year.

One of Santos's career highlights was his bout against Kostya Tszyu, a formidable WBC light welterweight champion. On February 12, 2000, Santos faced Tszyu at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut, but lost by an eighth-round knockout. This fight showcased Santos's ability to compete at the highest level, even if he fell short against one of the era's best fighters. Following this loss, Santos's career began to wind down, with a final professional record of 28 wins, 5 losses, and 4 draws, including 16 wins by knockout.

Santos's final professional outing took place on August 26, 2001, at The El San Juan Hotel & Casino in  San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he lost by second-round technical knockout to Wilfredo Negron. This bout marked the end of a career that had seen him face some of the toughest opponents in the light welterweight division. After retiring from boxing, Santos transitioned into a career as a newspaper columnist, writing for publications like Prensa Hispana and La Voz in Phoenix, Arizona, where he resides. His transition from the ring to the page reflects his versatility and ability to adapt to new challenges.
