Fight Report
The evening of Thursday, September 4th, marked a turning point in the super-middleweight division as Cuban southpaw Osleys Iglesias delivered a career-best performance, defeating Russian contender Vladimir Shishkin via eighth-round technical knockout in Montreal. The bout, staged at the Cabaret du Casino de Montréal, was an IBF title eliminator, and Iglesias defended his IBO crown in front of his adopted home audience on his promoter, Eye of the Tiger Management card.
From the opening bell, Iglesias asserted his slight physical advantagesâstanding 6?2? to Shishkinâs 6?1?âand showcased his natural southpaw style and reach to hammer home repeated power punches upstairs. In round one, the Cubanâs right hook snapped Shishkinâs head back, setting the tone for a dominant opening stanza.
Shishkin, rugged and resilient, shifted gears in round two. He began to fire his jab with more frequency, trying to slow Iglesiasâs aggressive entries and disengage when needed. Though that adjustment earned Shishkin a slightly more composed look, Iglesias remained firmly in control of the tempo, consistently outlanding him in power punches through the middle rounds.
By round six, the fight was becoming tough with damage begining to show on both men. Iglesias carried visible marks around his eyesârare for a man who traditionally ended fights earlyâevidence that Shishkin had pushed him more than most. At the same time, Shishkinâs own face began to swell. In the seventh, a cut opened under his right eye, a clear sign of accumulating damage.
The pivotal moment arrived in the eighth. Iglesias unleashed a long, penetrating left that snapped Shishkinâs head back, forcing him into the ropes. Not letting up, Iglesias unleashed a ferocious barrage from close quartersâan eight-punch combo followed by a left-right sequenceâbefore unloading about ten heavy headshots that forced referee Michael Griffin to halt the action at 1:28 of round eight.
Though Shishkin never hit the canvas, his inability to block or respond prompted the stoppageâhis first TKO loss in a pro career that was previously defined by unanimous-decision setbacks, including the one to William Scull last October for the vacant IBF super-middleweight title. As for Iglesias, the win extended his knockout streak to eight and improved his record to an unblemished 14-0 with 13 knockouts, making his power and finishing ability at the top level, evident.
The bout illustrated Iglesiasâs maturation. His southpaw lead, combined with precise straight lefts and sneaky right hooks, allowed him to adjust mid-fightâmaintaining power deep into the contest, calmly picking apart a durable veteran. Shishkinâs game planâuse the jab to control distance, retreat when pressuredâwas sound, but he could not match Iglesiasâs sustained output or follow-up power against a younger, hungrier puncher, which proved the difference.
With this win, Iglesias ascends to the No. 1 ranking in the IBF super-middleweight division, making him the mandatory challenger for the undisputed crown held by Canelo Ălvarez. Yet Alvarez, known to vacate belts rather than face mandatories, may again leave Iglesias waitingâbut for now, thereâs no denying Iglesiasâs place on the world-title doorstep.
