Ramirez, Davis, Farmer, Gamboa Roundup

Jose Ramirez vs Maurice Hooker
Jose Ramirez unified the WBC and WBO Super-lightweight titles in an explosive shootout with Maurice Hooker on a Matchroom Boxing/DAZN show in Arlington, Texas. The former 2012 Olympian Ramirez, started fast, getting inside Hooker’s long jab. Ramirez was incorrectly accredited a knockdown when he stood on Hooker’s foot, causing the tall Texan to crash to the canvas.

Hooker continued to try and keep the swarming Californian at the end of his long reach but Ramirez found his way inside, which caused Hooker to trade hard hooks in some exciting exchanges. In the 6th round, Ramirez landed a good left hook which caused Hooker to fall into the ropes, Ramirez took his opportunity and was landing heavy blows when referee Mark Nelson jumped in to stop the fight at 1:48 of the round.

Ramirez will await the result of the Josh Taylor vs Regis Prograis WBSS final later this year, which is also a WBA/IBF unification bout, and hopefully meet the winner in 2020.

Gervonta Davis vs Ricardo Nunez

Gervonta Davis vs Ricardo Nunez
WBA Super-featherweight champion Gervonta Davis impressed his hometown fans at the Royal Farm Arena in Baltimore, Maryland with a 2nd round stoppage of his No2 ranked contender, Panamanian, Ricardo Nunez.

Nunez looked confident in the 1st round, with 19 stoppages in his 21 wins, he probably felt he could match the hard hitting champion in the fire-power department, but in the 2nd round Davis landed a left hand that knocked Nunez into the ropes and then unloaded his heavy shots until a huge left made the badly hurt Panamanian to sit down momentarily on the ropes. Referee Harvey Dock quickly jumped in and stopped the fight at 1:33 of the round.

Davis now needs a big name opponent to elevate his career to the next level. He called out IBF champion Tevin Farmer as his preferred next opponent after the fight.

Tevin farmer vs Guillaume Frenois

IBF Super-featherweight champion Tevin Farmer easily turned back the challenge of Frenchman Guillaume Frenois on the Matchroom USA/ DAZN show headlined by the Jose Ramirez vs Maurice Hooker unification bout at the College Park Center, in Arlington, Texas.

The champion retained his title by a wide unanimous decision in a fight that the fans in the arena found unsatisfactory. Even Farmer’s co-promoter Lou DiBella said after the fight “I think he could have pressed and been more aggressive.”
For his part, Farmer made Frenois miss and countered with fast combinations but didn’t seem to try for the stoppage or up the pace. The champion was docked a point in the 10th round but went on to win a wide points decision anyway.

Yuriorkis gamboa vs Roman 'Rocky' Martinez

Yuriorkis Gamboa vs Roman Martinez
In a performance that breathes new life into the career of struggling 37-year-old Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa, the once highly touted stylist blasted out the 36-year-old former 3 times WBO Super-featherweight champion Roman ‘Rocky’ Martinez in the 2nd round of their crossroads fight on the undercard of the Gervonta Davis vs Ricardo Nunez title fight. Gamboa scored two knockdowns after Puerto Rican Martinez tried for an early finish in his own favour.

Martinez was made to look slow by the still fast hands of Gamboa. The fight, which was fought at Lightweight, was officially stopped by referee Bill Clancy the 2:00 of the 2nd round.

Talk of Gamboa challenging headliner Gervonta Davis in his next fight should be left as just that; talk, because Gamboa is nowhere near the talent he once was and would be an easy mark for the sharp shooting 24-year-old Davis who is looking like a future P4P No1 candidate.
