Tim Witherspoon Biography
Tim Witherspoon, known as "Terrible" Tim, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on December 27, 1957. Standing at 6 feet 3½ inches with a 78-inch reach, he became a prominent figure in the heavyweight boxing scene during the 1980s and 1990s.
Witherspoon's amateur career was brief, comprising only six bouts. Despite this limited experience, he turned professional on October 30, 1979, debuting with a first-round technical knockout against Joe Adams at the Forum in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. His early professional years were marked by rapid progression, including serving as a sparring partner for Muhammad Ali during Ali's preparation for his 1980 comeback fight against Larry Holmes.
In May 1983, Witherspoon challenged Larry Holmes for the WBC World Heavyweight Title at the Dunes Hotel in Las Vegas. Despite a valiant effort, he lost by a disputed twelve-round split decision. Undeterred, he continued to climb the ranks and, on March 9, 1984, secured the WBC heavyweight title by defeating Greg Page via a twelve-round majority decision. However, his reign was short-lived, as he lost the title to Pinklon Thomas on August 31, 1984.
Witherspoon's resilience led him to another title opportunity. On January 17, 1986, he captured the WBA World Heavyweight Title by outpointing Tony Tubbs in a closely contested bout. He successfully defended this title against Frank Bruno at Wembley Stadium in London, achieving an eleventh-round technical knockout. However, his second title reign ended on December 12, 1986, when he lost to James "Bonecrusher" Smith by a first-round knockout at Madison Square Garden.
Throughout his career, Witherspoon faced numerous world-class opponents, including notable victories over James Tillis, Greg Page, and Frank Bruno. He also squared off against Larry Holmes and later contenders like Ray Mercer and Andrew Golota. His professional journey spanned over two decades, concluding on March 15, 2003, with a split decision loss to Brian Nix at the Grand Casino Pavilion in Gulfport, Mississippi. Witherspoon retired with a record of 55 wins, 13 losses, and 1 draw, including 38 wins by knockout.
Beyond his in-ring accomplishments, Witherspoon's career was marked by legal battles, particularly against promoter Don King, highlighting management and fighter rights issues within the sport. After retiring from professional boxing, he dedicated himself to training upcoming fighters, including his son, Tim Witherspoon Jr., contributing to the sport's development from outside the ropes.
