Piet Crous Biography
Piet Crous, born on July 2, 1955, in Johannesburg, South Africa, is a notable figure in the history of the cruiserweight division. Crous began his professional boxing career on November 14, 1977, and over the next nearly a decade, he would carve out a reputation as a skilled and resilient boxer.
Crous's rise to prominence was marked by his victory over the seasoned Ossie Ocasio on December 1, 1984, at the Superbowl in Sun City, South Africa. This bout, which Crous won by a unanimous decision over 15 rounds, earned him the WBA World Cruiserweight Title. The fight was part of a significant boxing event that also saw South African heavyweight star Gerrie Coetzee lose his title to Greg Page in a controversial match. Despite suffering a nasty cut eye during the Ocasio fight, Crous's determination and fast hands secured his victory and made him a hero in South Africa.
Following his title win, Crous made one successful defense of his WBA title against Randy Stephens from Dallas, Texas, on March 30, 1985. This fight, also held at the Superbowl in Sun City, saw Crous overcome an early knockdown to stop Stephens in the third round via TKO.
However, Crous's reign as champion was short-lived. On July 27, 1985, he faced Dwight Muhammad Qawi, a former light-heavyweight champion who had recently moved up to the cruiserweight division. Despite a strong start, Crous was eventually overwhelmed by Qawi's relentless pressure and was knocked out in the eleventh round, losing his title in the process. This fight marked a turning point in Crous's career, as he was never the same after facing the formidable Qawi.
Crous continued to box after his loss to Qawi, winning a few more fights before his final professional outing. His career came to an end on May 16, 1987, when he was knocked out by underdog Freddie Rafferty in the seventh round. This loss signaled the end of a career that, although not long, was marked by significant achievements and tough battles against world-class opponents.
Throughout his career, Crous demonstrated a blend of speed, heart, and resilience that made him a respected figure in the cruiserweight division. Though he may be a forgotten champion today, his legacy remains as part of the rich history of boxing in South Africa and the cruiserweight division.
