Mimoun Mohatar Biography
Mimoun Mohatar, born in Morocco on November 7, 1951, established his boxing career after moving to Spain, where he fought out of Madrid. Competing in the welterweight division, Mohatar had an orthodox stance and began his professional career with a TKO victory over Jesus Arjona on April 15, 1972, in La Coruna, Spain. Throughout his career, Mohatar built a reputation as a tough and durable competitor, capable of stepping into the ring with some of the most formidable names in the sport.
In 1975, Mohatar fought Rocky Mattioli in Milan, losing a 10-round decision against the future world champion. A year later, in 1976, he squared off against Maurice Hope in London, a match that ended in a second-round TKO loss, highlighting the challenges of facing elite-level opposition. Continuing to test himself against top contenders, he faced Ayub Kalule in Copenhagen in 1977, where he lost another 10-round decision to a fighter who would later become a world champion.
Mohatar's resilience paid off when he captured the African Boxing Union (ABU) African Welterweight title on February 4, 1978, with a points victory over Salem Ouedraogo in Abidjan. This success earned him a shot at the WBC World Welterweight title just over a month later, challenging the reigning champion Carlos Palomino at The Aladdin in Las Vegas. Although he fought valiantly, Palomino's superior skill and relentless body attack led to a ninth-round stoppage, a testament to the high level of competition Mohatar faced throughout his career.
Following the title shot, Mohatar succeeded in the African circuit, reclaiming the vacant ABU African Welterweight title on June 16, 1979, with a sixth-round knockout of Mohamed Bukasaf. However, by the early 1980s, his career was winding down. On May 27, 1982, he faced Tadashi Mihara in Takasaki, Japan, in his final professional bout, losing a unanimous decision over 10 rounds. Mohatar's career spanned a decade of battles across different continents, facing some of the best welterweights of his era and making a name for himself both in Europe and Africa.
