Jose Becerra Biography
Jose Becerra, born on April 15, 1936, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, was a professional boxer renowned for his prowess in the bantamweight division. Over a career spanning just over nine years, Becerra's fighting style and significant achievements marked him as one of the memorable figures in boxing during his active years.
Making his professional debut on August 30, 1953, against Ray Gomez in Guadalajara, Becerra showcased his potential early on by securing a victory through a fourth-round knockout in a scheduled six-round contest. This debut set the tone for a career that would make him a formidable fighter in the ring.
Becerra's career highlight came when he captured the World Bantamweight Title on July 8, 1959, defeating Alphonse Halimi by an eighth-round knockout at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles. This victory crowned him as a world champion and elevated his status in the boxing community, setting him up for further high-profile bouts.
He defended his title successfully against challengers such as Kenji Yonekura in Tokyo on May 23, 1960, in a closely contested fight that ended in a split decision in Becerra's favour after 15 rounds. This win further solidified his reputation as a world-class fighter capable of holding his own in tough battles.
However, the rigours of the sport became evident when Becerra faced Eloy Sanchez on August 30, 1960, in Ciudad Juarez. The fight concluded with Becerra suffering a defeat by knockout in the eighth round of a scheduled ten-round bout. This event prompted him to announce his retirement immediately afterwards, citing the brutal nature of the fight and its toll on his health.
Becerra's final return to the ring in 1962 was for a benefit show to aid Mexican club fighter Rudy Coronado and his family after Coronado was seriously injured. Becerra fought and won a 6-round decision against Alberto Martinez, donating his fight purse to Coronado's family. This bout marked the end of Becerra's professional boxing career.
Jose Becerra passed away on August 6, 2016, at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire Mexican fighters and boxing fans alike.
