Fulgencio ObelmejĂas, known as "Fully Obel," was born on January 1, 1953, in San JosĂ© de RĂo Chico, Venezuela. Standing 6 feet 0½ inches with a 72-inch reach, he fought as an orthodox boxer in the super-middleweight division.
Before turning professional, ObelmejĂas represented Venezuela in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, competing in the middleweight category. He faced Luis Felipe MartĂnez of Cuba in the first round but was eliminated after a 0-5 decision.
ObelmejĂas made his professional debut in Caracas on January 30, 1977, securing a first-round technical knockout against Franklin Suzarra. This victory marked the beginning of a career that would span over 15 years.
Throughout his career, ObelmejĂas faced several world-class opponents. He challenged Marvin Hagler twice for the world middleweight title but was unsuccessful on both occasions. However, he succeeded significantly in the super-middleweight division, winning twice the WBA World Super Middleweight Title. His first reign began on May 23, 1988, when he defeated Chong-Pal Park via unanimous decision. He lost the title to In-Chul Baek on May 28, 1989, but regained it on November 28, 1990, with a victory over Dario Walter Matteoni. ObelmejĂas retired with a professional record of 52 wins, 5 losses, and 0 draws, including 41 wins by knockout.
ObelmejĂas concluded his professional boxing career on December 15, 1992, with a points victory over Eduardo Rodriguez in Caracas.
