Biography

Eddie Perkins, born on March 3, 1937, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, relocated with his family to Chicago at the age of one. His early interest in boxing was nurtured through backyard bouts with neighbourhood friends, eventually leading him to train at a Chicago gym owned by Joe Louis. Perkins compiled a 26-10 record as an amateur and secured the Windy City lightweight title.

On December 27, 1956, Perkins transitioned to the professional ranks. He faced Norman Johnson in Milwaukee, losing by unanimous decision. Undeterred, he refined his skills under the guidance of Hall of Fame bantamweight Johnny Coulon, developing a crafty boxer-puncher style. Perkins became a globetrotter, competing in over twenty countries throughout his career.

In the early 1960s, Perkins engaged in a notable trilogy with Italy's Duilio Loi. Their first encounter in 1961 resulted in a draw. Perkins claimed victory in their second bout on September 14, 1962, in Milan, winning by unanimous decision to capture the Lineal and WBA light welterweight titles. However, he lost the titles by decision in their third meeting on December 15, 1962, also in Milan.

Perkins regained championship status on June 15, 1963, defeating Roberto Cruz in Manila to win the Lineal, WBA, and newly formed WBC light welterweight titles. He successfully defended these titles twice, including a knockout victory over Yoshinori Takahashi in Tokyo on January 4, 1964. His reign concluded on January 18, 1965, when he lost a split decision to Carlos Morocho Hernández in Caracas.

Perkins faced numerous world-class opponents throughout his career, including bouts against Nicolino Locche and José Nápoles. Despite the high level of competition, he remained a formidable contender in the super lightweight division.

Perkins concluded his professional journey on May 31, 1975, in Cologne, where he lost on points to Franz Csandl. Retiring with a record of 74 wins (21 by knockout), 20 losses, and 3 draws, he was later honoured with inductions into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 2006 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2008.

Eddie Perkins passed away on May 10, 2012, at the age of 75, leaving behind a legacy as one of boxing's most skilled and travelled champions.
