Diego Corrales Biography
Diego "Chico" Corrales carved out a legacy as one of boxing's most electrifying fighters during his tragically brief career. Born in Columbia, South Carolina, on August 25, 1977, Corrales emerged from a turbulent youth in Sacramento's Oak Park neighbourhood, where gang involvement and street violence shaped his early years. His path to boxing provided structure, leading to an impressive 105-12 amateur record and notable appearances in the 1995 Pan American Games and World Championships.
Standing 5'11" (179cm), Corrales was unusually tall for the lightweight division, yet he chose to fight in a crowd-pleasing inside style rather than utilizing his reach advantage. From 1996 to 2007, his professional career saw him capture world titles across two weight classes. He held the IBF and WBO super featherweight titles and later claimed the WBC, Ring magazine, and lineal lightweight championships.
His career featured defining moments that showcased both triumph and adversity. His 2001 bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr. resulted in his first professional loss, a stoppage after five knockdowns. Following this defeat, Corrales served 14 months in prison for domestic violence against his pregnant wife, a dark chapter that significantly impacted his legacy.
Post-incarceration, Corrales rebuilt his career with championship victories over elite opponents, including Joel Casamayor, Acelino Freitas, and, most notably, Jose Luis Castillo. The first Castillo fight in 2005 is his crowning achievement - a brutal back-and-forth war that saw Corrales rise from two knockdowns in the tenth round to secure a stunning TKO victory. This bout earned universal Fight of the Year honours and is considered one of boxing's greatest contests.
Corrales compiled a 7-2 record in world title fights, with five wins by knockout. Against world champions, he went 5-5, demonstrating his willingness to face elite competition throughout his career. His final record was 40-5 with 33 knockouts, reflecting his aggressive, power-punching style.
Tragically, on May 7, 2007 - exactly two years after his legendary first bout with Castillo - Corrales died in a motorcycle accident in Las Vegas. Toxicology reports revealed his blood alcohol content was 0.25%, more than three times Nevada's legal limit. His impact on boxing was formally recognized with his 2024 induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, cementing his place among the sport's most memorable fighters.
