Amelia Moore Biography
Amelia Moore’s professional record reveals little about the depth of experience she accumulated during more than a decade in American amateur boxing. Born in Middletown, Connecticut, on February 4, 1990, she grew up in the Oxford Hills region of western Maine and began studying karate at age 7. She competed in sparring and kata before participating in football, soccer, hockey and athletics, establishing the broad physical foundation that later supported her boxing career.
Moore became interested in boxing while attending a self-defence kickboxing class in Portland during her teenage years. Once she had the means to travel regularly, she began training under former lightweight world champion Joey Gamache in Lewiston. Her development continued over two years at the United States Naval Academy, though academy regulations required her to train off-campus. She competed in her first sanctioned USA Boxing bout on February 5, 2011, one day after her 21st birthday.
Her rise through the American system was particularly rapid. After only 14 official contests, Moore qualified for the selection tournament connected to the 2016 Olympic Games, having defeated Dalia Gomez at the Pathway to Glory Olympic Trials qualifier in 2015. Illness forced her to withdraw before the decisive competition, interrupting her first attempt to reach the Olympic team.
Moore subsequently became one of the leading American women across several weight categories. Her most productive domestic period included victories at the 2017 National Golden Gloves, the USA Boxing Elite National Championships and the National PAL Championships. She later won another USA Boxing national championship in December 2021. Accounts describing her as a five-time national champion include her successes across these different major American tournaments rather than five victories in a single championship series.
Internationally, Moore represented the United States at tournaments including the Boxam competition in Spain and two editions of the Women’s World Championships. She was selected as Rashida Ellis’s alternate for the postponed Tokyo Olympic Games and later joined USA Boxing’s 2022 Elite High Performance Team. Competing at featherweight, she earned a bronze medal at the 2022 AMBC Continental Championships in Guayaquil, Ecuador. She remained within the Olympic programme through the following cycle, receiving a wildcard place for the 2024 United States Olympic Team Trials.
Tall, mobile and technically educated, Moore built her amateur boxing around quick feet, straight punches and control of distance. Her record of national titles, international selection and two Olympic campaigns established her as a significant figure within the American women’s programme long before she entered the professional ranks.
