Oscar :: Give Us Canelo vs Smith, Canelo vs Andrade, Not Spence Jr

Canelo and Jacobs clash at the weigh-in for their middleweight unification bout won by Canelo.

Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya is currently negotiating a middleweight bout between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and IBF Welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr, but with the natural size difference between the two boxers being so wide is it really a good matchup?

Boxing fans used to complain about Canelo always stepping into the ring weighing more than his opponents. Fighting Rocky Fielding and Daniel Jacobs, silenced those critics, but now we are going to give them a voice once again if Alvarez faces the much lighter Spence Jr who ironically has just beaten a Lightweight champion in a one-sided affair.

Spence Jr vs Mikey Garcia was seen as a good win for the Texas man but very few gave Garcia a chance before the first bell rang, and it was the obvious size difference that sealed Mikey’s fate.

Canelo has received rave reviews for the Jacob win, so why does he need to suddenly choose the 147lb Spence Jr? It doesn’t make sense. Surely the 2016 Canelo vs Amir Khan fight taught De La Hoya that as far as legacy is concerned, knocking out the far smaller Khan did his man no good whatsoever.

At 160lbs, Demetrius Andrade holds that last remaining world title belt not in the hands of Canelo. Andrade is promoted by Matchroom Boxing USA who provide the cards for DAZN who in turn have an 11 fight deal with Canelo, so that is a fight that can be made. Another is with WBA Super Super-middleweight champion Callum Smith who is also promoted by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.

Stories came out after the Canelo Jacobs bout that Alvarez had spoken to Golden Boy CEO Eric Gomez about his desire to face Smith next at the higher weight. Let’s see this fight happen. It would be a huge scalp for Canelo and another big event for boxing fans to savour.

Come on Oscar, give the fans what they want, it is them that will ultimately pay Your star Mexican’s wages after all.
