Michael Hunter vs Sergey Kuzmin Preview and Prediction

Heavyweight boxing is on a high at the moment and that is mostly due to the fact that so many 50/50 fights are being made that at one time were avoided to preserve unbeaten records.

Michael Hunter vs Sergey Kuzmin is on paper a 50/50 fight. Both were top level amateurs and both are roughly at the same level in the pro game. Hunter though has faced slightly better opposition since ditching the vest. Wins over Iago Kiladze, Martin Bakole Ilunga, and Alexander Ustinov have taken him to fringe world heavyweight title contender: WBO #12, IBF #10, WBC #15, and WBA #8. Kuzmin’s rankings: IBF #7, WBA #5.

Kuzmin had a good win in his last outing against Joey Dawejko and a victory over David Price at Wembley last year which is looking better since Price’s dominant display against Doncaster’s David Allen last month. But Kuzmin didn’t look good against Price, and while there was nothing in it when the Liverpool native retired with a torn bicep after 4 rounds. Kuzmin looked pedestrian and lacking in ideas, there wasn’t any change of pace or anything to suggest that he was going to take over the fight.

Hunter vs Kiladze

Kuzmin has fought in the USA seven times before in his professional career so the fight being staged at Madison Square Garden will not faze him. It is the level of opposition that he has faced that could be the deciding factor in this fight. Even Hunter’s sole defeat, a unanimous point’s loss to the soon to be undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk was a display of defiance and will to win on the California born Hunter’s part.

Kuzmin appears to have a solid chin so I don’t think Hunter will knock him out, more likely is that the fight goes to the scorecards.

Hunter on a unanimous decision.
