British Lightweight champion Joe Cordina defends his title against former amateur club mate Gavin Gwynne in an all Welsh clash between two unbeaten prospects on the undercard of Luke Campbell’s world Lightweight clash with P4P No1 Vasyl Lomachenko at the O2 arena on August 31st. The fight will be shown on Sky Box Office and on DAZN in the USA.
After only seven professional outings, Cordina was matched with Belgium’s former EBU title challenger Hakin Ben Ali with the vacant WBA International title at stake. After a convincing 3rd round Tko of the far more experienced Ali, Cordina then took another jump up in class when he took the vacant Commonwealth Lightweight title with a wide unanimous points win over Liverpool’s Sean Dodd.
Cordina’s last outing was a vacant British title challenge and defence of his Commonwealth title against past Sean Dodd conqueror Andy Townend. Cordina added the ‘Empire’ belt to his domestic strap with a 6th round stoppage. This was Townend’s 26th pro bout against the ‘Welsh Wizard’s’ 8th and yet the gulf in class far outweighed experience.
Cordina and Gwynne know each other well, having sparred both in the Welsh squad and at the St Josephs Boxing Club in Newport as amateurs but this is not a 3 x 3 minute round fight. Cordina has won over the championship distance before against Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd, whereas Gwynne has won twice over 10 rounds.
At 6’ tall Gwynne is a giant Lightweight and has so far shown the ability to fight at a high pace over the 10 round distance, so will these to assets be enough to tame the talent of Joe Cordina? With only 1 stoppage in his 12 fight unbeaten record, it might be this statistic that proves Gwynne’s undoing. With Cordina now sitting down on his shots more he has found some decent punch power and Gwynne will need to be able to keep the Cardiff man at bay.
I feel that Cordina is one of the most improved fighters in the country and it is this that leads me to think that Cordina will finish the fight before the 10th round.
Cordina by stoppage before the championship rounds.
