Jaime Munguia vs Patrick Allotey Preview and Prediction

WBO super-welterweight champion Jaime Munguia won a controversial majority decision in his last defence against Dennis Hogan.

Without Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez fighting on Mexican Independence weekend, Golden Boy Promotions have drafted in Jaime Munguia to defend his WBO super-welterweight title against Ghanian Patrick Allotey (40-3-0, 30 Ko’s) at the Dignity Health Sports Park, in Carson, California. The fight is being streamed live by DAZN.

Allotey was not the first choice opponent for golden Boy, they were trying to make a non-title fight with former two-weight world champion Jesse Vargas with the stipulation that they fight at 156lbs. Vargas wanted to fight for Munguia’s WBO title, so they couldn’t find an agreement and moved on.

Allotey has 43 fights on his resume but most of them took place in his home country, Ghana. Of his 3 losses, the first was in Zambia for the WBC International welterweight title against Charles Manyuchi (L Tko 8), the second in the USA against Patrick Teixeira (L Ko 2), and the last in Kazakhstan against Kanat Islam (L Ud). Allotey doesn’t appear to travel well.

Perhaps Allotey sees a glimmer of light watching Munguia’s last fight, a controversial majority decision win over Australian Dennis Hogan. The 6 foot tall, 22-year-old Mexican has been fast outgrowing the 154lb division and it seemed to catch up with him during the Hogan fight. Many thought Hogan did enough to capture the title. The risk here is that Munguia doesn’t make the weight while retaining his strength and punch resistance. There is an outside chance of an upset here.

Oscar de La Hoya, the CEO of Golden Boy, Munguia’s promoters, could not allow this weekend’s festivities go past without staging a big fight involving a Mexican world champion, so they will be hoping that Munguia can put on an explosive performance to send the Mexican fans home happy. I think he has the right opponent to do so.

Prediction: Munguia to stop Allotey by the mid-way stage.
