Is There Anyone Left For Loma At 135lb?

Lomachenko vs Crolla at The Staples center.

After watching Vasiliy “High-Tech” Lomachenko dismantle Manchester’s former WBA Lightweight holder Anthony “Million Dollar” Crolla in ruthless fashion, I started to wonder if there are any legitimate claims from his contemporary’s to being able to beat the Ukrainian.

The 4th round win over Crolla was to be blunt, easy work for Lomachenko. With no disrespect to Crolla who has been an outstanding example of grit and determination during his 13-year pro career, the chasm in class was huge.

It’s very rare to see a fighter control distance in the way Loma can. His timing is perfect and the way he manoeuvres his opponent into position to land his combinations is, well, extraordinary.

Does Lomachenko compare with the all-time greats? Definitely. He is rare in so much as at age 31 years, he is improving, adding more to his game, he treats a fighter like Crolla as if he’s Sugar Ray Leonard, he is the complete fighter.

So who can challenge Loma?

There has been recent talk of Lomachenko moving back down to 130lbs to challenge the excellent Gervonta Davis for his WBA Super-featherweight title, and yet Loma looked big at 135lb, could he still be strong at 130lbs?

Round 4 and it’s all over for Crolla after Lomachenko shows his class.

WBC No1 Luke Campbell would bring a technical approach to a matchup with Mr “High-Tech” himself, but I can’t see that working for the Yorkshire man.

Freddie Roach believes that Loma can be beaten with pressure, the controlled but relentless variety with plenty of body shots in the fashion that Orlando Salido produced in Loma’s only professional defeat.

That’s great Fred but who’s going to do this, and take the volume of fast hard shots that they are going to have to eat while administering this pressure?

Probably the guy most likely to succeed is Mikey Garcia. While Garcia was badly out-pointed by Errol Spence Jr up at 147lbs, he possesses the toughness and ability to test the P4P No1. He took plenty of big shots from the hard-hitting IBF welterweight champion without going down after all.

The problem will be if Garcia can still make Lightweight without draining himself. If he can, and he goes after the Loma fight, we could see Roach’s theory put to the test.

Let’s see what happens.
