On August 22, 1947, Willie Pep, the reigning World Featherweight Champion, faced off against challenger Jock Leslie at Atwood Stadium in Flint, Michigan. With an impressive record of 114 wins, one loss, and one draw, Pep proved his superiority by knocking out Leslie at 0:45 of the 12th round in their scheduled 15-round championship bout.

Leslie, born Leslie Jock in Standish, Michigan, had reversed his name at the suggestion of his manager, Les Krell. Fighting out of New Orleans, where he had lost only twice in 22 appearances, Leslie entered the bout on an eight-fight winning streak in 1947.

Despite the challenger's valiant effort, Pep dominated most of the rounds. The Associated Press reported that Pep admitted Leslie had taken more punishment than any other challenger he had faced. The champion praised his opponent, stating, “He kept his hands up, and I couldn't get in. I only had to hit the other fellows a few times, and they went down, but he kept right on coming. He was a darn good boy and a good fighter.”

The New York Sun acknowledged Leslie's performance, noting that while Pep's knockout victory was definitive, the hometown fighter had given the champion a stern test. The Minneapolis Morning Tribute echoed this sentiment: “Willie kayoed a corking good fighter. The Flint boy is a stiff puncher, game and tough.”

When the end came in the 12th round, referee Clarence Rosen halted his count at "4," though reports suggested he "could have counted 100." Despite his commendable effort, Leslie was outclassed by the skilful and experienced Pep.

This successful title defence further solidified Willie Pep's status as one of the greatest featherweight champions in boxing history. His ability to overcome a game and determined challenger in Jock Leslie showcased the depth of his talent and ring general-ship.

Although Leslie's loss to Pep was a setback, his spirited performance earned him the respect of both the champion and the boxing community. His manager, Les Krell, had guided him to a title shot. Although he fell short against the legendary Pep, Leslie's showing proved he was a formidable contender in the featherweight division.

The Pep-Leslie bout fought before an enthusiastic crowd in Flint, Michigan, served as a testament to both fighters' skill, courage, and determination. While Willie Pep emerged victorious, Jock Leslie's valiant effort ensured that his name would be remembered as a worthy challenger to one of boxing's all-time greats.
