The WBC World Super-welterweight Title fight between Thomas Hearns and Mark Medal took place on June 23, 1986, at Caesars Palace Outdoor Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight was part of a triple-header that was broadcasted on closed-circuit television, which included Barry McGuigan vs. Steve Cruz and Roberto Duran vs. Robbie Sims.
Thomas Hearns, from Detroit, Michigan, was an 11 to 1 favourite to win the match, and he did not disappoint. The fight began with Hearns sending Medal to the canvas with a right-left combination in the first round, which was the only knockdown of the fight. Throughout the succeeding rounds, Hearns displayed a vicious body attack and shook Medal several more times.
Despite Medal's tough resistance, Thomas Hearns was too much for him to handle. In the eighth round, referee Davey Pearl stopped the fight so that the ringside doctor could examine Medal, whose left eye was swollen shut. The doctor instructed the referee to stop the fight, giving Hearns the victory via TKO at 2:20 of the eighth round.
Hearns was defending his WBC World Super-welterweight Title for the fourth time and made $900,000 for his efforts, while Medal received $75,000 for his participation. The fight was attended by 10,200 fans, who were treated to a thrilling bout between two skilled fighters
