South Korean Soo Hwan Hong travelled to Kokugikan, Japan to make the first defence of the inaugural WBA World super-bantamweight title he won against Hector Carrasquilla in Panama City three months earlier. His challenger Yu Kasahara (12-0) was far less experienced than Hong (40-4-3) and although the challenger made it through the 15 rounds to lose a unanimous decision he found himself on the canvas in the 1st, 5th, 9th, and twice in the 10th rounds.
