Having won the WBA world super-lightweight title four months earlier in Paris, France against Morrocan Khalid Rahilou, Mitchell, made his first defence against, New York-based Dominican Pedro Saiz in Washington DC, his hometown.
Saiz had very little in his past to suggest that he could upset the slick champion and so it proved as Mitchell went about outboxing his challenger. The fight went the distance and Mitchell picked up a unanimous decision win.
