After a year out of action due to an Achilles tendon Injury, WBA world heavyweight champion Chagaev faced unbeaten but untested Costa Rican Carl Davis Drumond.

Chagaev won the title from Nikolai Valuev after winning a final eliminator against former champion John Ruiz and made his first defence against Britain's Matt Skelton.

In the third round, Chagaev suffered a bad cut over the left eye after a head clash. In the 6th round referee, Gustavo Padilla ended the fight due to the severity of the cut and the fight went to the scorecards.

Scorecards: Hector Afu 58-56 | Jean-Louis Legland 60-54 | Paul Thomas 58-56.

Four months later Chagaev challenged Vladimir Klitschko for his IBF, WBO, and IBO titles, losing by 9th round retirement.
