On Saturday 29th January 1977, Roberto Duran retained his WBA World Lightweight Title with a 13th round knockout of Vilomar Fernandez at the Fontainbleau Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida. This was Duran's 10th title defense since winning the lightweight crown in 1972 and his 10th knockout, cementing his reputation as one of the best lightweights of his generation.

Despite taking control of the fight early on, Fernandez managed to score occasionally with crisp lefts and rights. However, it was Duran's relentless attack on the body that ultimately proved to be the difference. Duran's "Manos de Piedra" or "hands of stone," as they are known throughout Latin America, were too much for Fernandez, who was knocked down for only the second time in his career.

Although there was never any doubt about the outcome of the fight, Fernandez proved to be a tough opponent, remaining light on his feet until just before the final two blows. The fight was televised nationally by CBS and was promoted by Don King. Duran earned a purse of $60,000, while Fernandez received $20,000. The ring was constructed on the Fontainbleau Hotel's indoor tennis court, with seating limited to just 1,200 people and ticket prices scaled at $40, $25, and $10.
