Saturday night at the Spectrum in Philadelphia saw Roberto Duran, the WBA World Lightweight champion, face off against Edwin Viruet in his 11th title defense. Duran had an impressive record of 61 wins, 1 loss, and no draws, and Viruet had 23 wins, 2 losses, and 2 draws before the fight. Despite Viruet's cunning plan of attack, Duran's strength and unrelenting pressure forced him to the ropes time and again, resulting in a unanimous decision in Duran's favor.

It was an important moment for Duran, as he had won his previous ten title defenses by knockout, but Viruet proved to be a formidable opponent who could withstand Duran's power. After the fight, Duran pocketed $150,000, while Viruet received a more modest sum of $15,000. Don King and Russell Peltz were the promoters behind the event, which saw Duran prove his mettle as a champion.

The fight also marked the second time Duran and Viruet had faced off, with their previous 10-round bout taking place in Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, New York on September 30th, 1975. Duran had won that fight by unanimous decision, and it seemed history was destined to repeat itself in Philadelphia. While it may not have been the knockout Duran was known for, his victory against Viruet showcased his skill and tenacity as a boxer.
