Robert Hines shocked the boxing world when he got up from knockdowns in the 2nd and 3rd rounds to outpoint Mathew Hilton (29-0-0) for the Canadian's IBF world super-welterweight title in November 1988. Three months later he defended the title for the first time against Darrin van Horn (39-0-0) at the Trump Castle in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
The 20-year-old Van Horn from Lexington, Kentucky boxed an intelligent fight using a quick jab and good footwork to pile the points up and win the title with a unanimous points decision.
Scores: Rocky Castellani 118-111 | Chuck Giampa 116-112 | Gary Merritt 118-110.
