Making the fifth defence of his IBF World Light-flyweight title in his hometown, Phoenix, Arizona, Michael Carbajal faced tough Mexican challenger Marcos Pacheco.
Carbajal had won the title from Thailand's Muangchai Kittikasem nineteen months earlier at the Veteran's Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix. This was the then 22-year-old Carbajal's first world title. He would go on to hold the WBC, IBF, and WBO light-flyweight titles during his ten-year career.
Marcos Pacheco was fighting outside his native Mexico for the first time in his career. He had gone the distance with former WBC, and future WBO world Light-flyweight champion Melchor Cob Castro in June 1990 but he had otherwise fought mainly lower-level opposition in his 23-3-1 career.
While Carbajal dominated the fight, Pacheco put in a good performance, lasting to hear the final bell.
Scores: Joe Garcia 116-111 | Hector Hernandez Vilchis 117-113 | Lucien Joubert 117-110.
