Having won the WBA world light-flyweight title in Japan five months earlier in a vacant title match with Shiro Yahiro (W Tko 9), Leo Gamez (25-3-0) had to travel once again for his first defence against Juan Torres (19-3-1). The fight took place in Torres home country of Panama, at the Gimnasio Nuevo Panama in Panama City.
Venezuelan Gamez dictated the fight, ending it in the 7th round after being ahead on all three judges scorecards.
