After three unsuccessful attempts to win the WBA World Light-flyweight title in South Korea (Myung Woo Yuh x 2 and Yong Kang Kim), Gamez finally became a two-weight world titleholder when he stopped Shiro Yahiro in 9 rounds in Tokyo, Japan.
Gamez made the fourth defence of his title in South Korea against Hi Yong Choi (17-1-0) at the Industrial Gym in Ulsan.
After 12 rounds the judges awarded the title to Choi by a unanimous decision.
Neffie Quintana 112-116 | Manuel Rodriguez Soler 113-118 | Bob Watson 114-115.
Out of five visits to South Korea, Gamez had one victory, his WBA vacant World Minimum-weight title victory over Bong Jun Kim in January 1988.
Gamez went on to become one of Venezuela's greatest ever boxers, winning world titles in four separate weight divisions.
