In April 1984 South Korea's Hwan Kil Yuh became the IBF's inaugural world super-featherweight champion when he beat Filipino Rod Sequenan on a split decision. Five months later he made the first defence of his title knocking out Thailand's Sak Galaxy in the 6th round at the Pohang Gymnasiumin in Pohang, South Korea.
On the 15th of February 1985, Kil travelled to the Festival Hall in Melbourne, Australia to defend against the unbeaten Lester Ellis and lost his title on a split decision to the precocious 20-year-old.
