Zapata made the fifth defence of the WBC World Light-flyweight Title that he had won from Shigeo Nakajima in Japan against American Joey Olivo in Panama City.
In heat off over 100 degrees and high humidity, the champion set a fast pace from the first bell and Olivo stayed with him. Zapata built a steady lead on the scorecards but, in the 13th round, Zapata raised the pace again when he felt that his challenger was growing weaker. At the end of the round, Olivo's corner announced that they were pulling their man out of the fight.
Olivo would win the WBA World Light-flyweight Title from Dominican Francisco Quiroz in 1985.
Zapata later became a two-weight world champion when he won the vacant WBA World Flyweight Title from American Alonzo Gonzalez.
