Panamanian Hilario Zapata (19-1-0) had made eight successful defences of his WBC world light-flyweight title when he was shockingly knocked out in the 2nd round by Mexican Amado Ursua (27-9-0) in front of Zapata's adoring fans at the Gimnasio Nuevo Panama in Panama City. Referee Ismael Quinones Falu counted the Panamanian out at 2:47 of the round.
Ursua lost the title to Japan's Tadashi Tomori two months later and Zapata then travelled to Kanazawa, Japan to reclaim the belt from Tomori by a split decision points win.
