Elly Pical made history when he became Indonesia's first-ever world boxing champion, knocking out reigning titleholder Ju Do Chun of South Korea in the 8th round at the Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia on the 3rd May 1985.
Three months later, Pical made his first defence against Australian Wayne Mulholland, again at the Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, winning by 3rd round Tko.
Pical was heavily favoured to keep his title when he met Polanco at the P.I. Arena-Coliseum in Jakarta, but the challenger shocked the champion's fans by winning a split decision to become IBF world champion.
Scores: Francisco Alejandro 143-146 | Frans J Limahelu 148-142 | Louis Race 138-147.
The pair would meet again five months later.
