Three months before he faced Yum, Cervantes scored a 6th round knockout victory over Mexican great Ruben Olivares in a WBC eliminator, a result that stands as the highlight of Cervantes career.

Yum lost the title to Puerto Rico's Wilfredo Gomez in his next defence. He had Gomez down in the first round.
