Venezuela's David Griman, the WBA World Flyweight Champion made the third defence of his title against Thailand's Somchai Chertchai who went by the ring name Saen Sor Ploenchit. The 24-year-old champion had won the title from fellow countryman Aquiles Guzman and defended against Hiroki Ioka in Osaka, Japan, and Colombian Alvaro Mercado at home in Puerto La Cruz.

Griman had lost his first attempt to become a world champion when he challenged the formidable Khaosai Galaxy for the WBA World Super-flyweight title in Thailand on the 20th of July 1991, and once again he failed to leave Thailand as a champion after he lost by a unanimous decision to Ploenchit.
