WBC world bantamweight champion Carlos Zarate made the third defence of his title at the El Toreo de Cuatro Caminos in Mexico City against Colombian Fernando Cabenela. Zarate had won the title from Rodolfo Martinez and had defended it successfully against Australian Paul Ferreri and Japan's Waruinge Nakayama.
Cabanela suffered a cut over his right eye in the 2nd round and the fight was stopped in round 3 when the challenger was ruled unfit to continue, leaving the champion the victor.
