Antonio Gomez lost a hotly disputed decision to Mexican Raul Martinez Mora in November 1971. having won the WBA world featherweight title in Japan from Shozo Saijo, Gomez then fought two non-title bouts, the first in Caracus against Jose Smecca (W Tko 7) and then against Mora in Monterrey, Mexico (L UD).

The rematch took place at the Maestranza Cesar Gironin Maracay, Venezuela, and Gomez took no chances of the judges repeating what he believed to be an injustice in their first fight. The champion knocked his challenger down twice in the third round and ended matters in the 7th to secure the first successful defence of his title.

Six months after the Mora fight, Gomez lost his title by majority decision to Panamanian Ernesto Marcel.
