Hearn $5m Offer to “Tank” Davis

Tevin Farmer defends his IBF title against Ireland’s Jonjo Carroll.

When Matchroom USA head honcho Eddie Hearn stated recently that he intends to offer WBA Super World Super-featherweight titleist Gervonta “Tank” Davis a $5m payday to face undefeated IBF Champion Tevin Farmer, he certainly gained some attention. Now, weather he actually intends to honour that offer or he’s just used it to gain interest for Farmer, who fights Jonjo Carroll this coming Friday, March 15th, remains to be seen. Farmer is co-promoted by Matchroom USA and DiBella Entertainment.

Farmer makes the 3rd defence of his title in front of his hometown fans for the first time since winning the title in Australia in August 2018 against former champion Billy Dibb. The Carroll fight takes place at The Liacouras Centre, Philadelphia.

Davis vs Farmer is a bout that has been touted for some time now. It would pit two excellent champions who appear to have a genuine grudge against each other in a unification bout. What more could all parties concerned ask for?

The popularity of boxing in recent years is partly due to promoters and TV companies seeing the benefits of their boxers fighting the opponents the fans want them to fight. Deals are there to be made and let’s face it, as long as your promotional or TV company makes acceptable financial gains, does it matter what show or feed it goes out on? Business is business.

Carroll’s last bout ended in a split decision draw with Frenchman Guillaume Frenois.

Farmer has looked a solid and flashy performer since becoming a title holder, but Davis has looked a level above. Gervonta has genuine power in either hand. No opponent has managed to finish on his feet since Davis won a unanimous decision over Mexican German Meraz in October 2014, even then, Davis had his man down in rounds 3 and 5. The Mexican remains Davis’s only opponent to hear the final bell in a (21-0-0 20KO’s) career.

Gervonta “Tank” Davis scores a 3rd round TKO against former world champion Cristobal Cruz in 2015.

Accidents aside, Farmer will have too much class for the teak tough Jonjo Carroll, but In my opinion Gervonta Davis will destroy Tevin Farmer if Mr Hearn and associates ever decide to make good on that $5m offer.
