Erislandy Lara vs Ramon Alvarez Preview and Prediction

Former WBA super welterweight champion Erislandy Lara contests his old title against a familiar name; Alvarez, not Saul but his brother Ramon. Lara of course fought Saul Alvarez back in July 2014, losing a highly contentious split decision to the flame haired ‘Canelo’, a decision that almost all but the most ardent ‘Canelo’ fans believe went to the wrong fighter.

The fight takes place at the Minneapolis Armoury on Saturday 31st August and will be shown live on FOX.

It’s a bit of a mystery how Ramon Alvarez has managed to get a world title shot. Just two fights ago he was stopped in the 9th round by former lightweight world champion Brandon Rios. Rios was making a comeback and needed an opponent that wouldn’t be too taxing but had a recognisable name for the Television viewers, Alvarez fitted the job role perfectly. Three months later Rios lost to 39-year-old former 3-weight world champion Humberto Soto, prompting Brandon to retire.

Alvarez does have a few decent names on his resume but the one that caught my attention was Mario Alberto Lozano, the Mexican who lost in 7 rounds to Liverpool’s Liam Smith in Hermosillo last weekend, Alvarez lost to Lozano in 2012. Now, Lozano is a bit of a gatekeeper type, and Ramon failed to get through the gate.

Lara is a product of the Cuban amateur boxing programme, a master tactician that doesn’t always produce unbridled excitement but is tough to beat. Even at 36-years-old there is no one in the 154lb division that would start as a big favourite against the man born in Guantanamo, Cuba.

This is a fight that has been made because of politics rather than ranking. Yes, Alvarez is officially ranked #6 by the WBA but how he got that position is known only to those who voted for it.

Lara will become world champion again.

Lara wins by stoppage between the 2nd and 5th round.
