Reasoning

Charly Suarez risks his WBO No. 1 ranking by facing Manuel ‘Tino’ Avila, whilst he could just sit it out and wait to face unified champion Emanuel Navarrete. He’s 37 now, so there’s no time for messing about, but the old Filipino still looks fresh because he fights with discipline, rhythm and that amateur-school sharpness. Manuel Avila isn’t some mug dragged in for a payday either. He was once a Golden Boy prospect, he’s been around the American circuit, and he knows how to keep himself together when things get rough.

Suarez is the cleaner technician. He boxes in straight lines when he wants, then shifts his feet just enough to make you reset. He’s not a one-shot banger, but he’s spiteful, accurate, and he knows when to let the hands go. Against Navarrete, he showed he could stand up to a world-class operator and perform when it mattered. That cut business was a mess, but the punch that caused it told me plenty. Suarez can mark you up when he times you.

Avila’s problem is pace. He’s tidy, game, and experienced, but he can fall into watching, waiting, and letting rounds slip away. Against a sharp old fox like Suarez, that’s dangerous. He’ll need to get inside the long rhythm, work the body, and make it a proper tear-up, not a fencing match.

I think Avila has moments early, maybe clips Suarez on the whiskers and makes him think. But once Suarez gets the range, the jab, the little half-steps and the counters start piling up. Avila’s pride keeps him there, but Suarez breaks him down with cleaner work.

Prediction: Suarez wins by stoppage.
