British Super-welterweight champion Ted Cheeseman makes the 2nd defence of his title when he faces Preston's Scott Fitzgerald at the Newcastle Arena on October 19th. The fight is on the undercard of Robbie Davies Jr's grudge match with Local, Lewis Ritson. The Newcastle fans will enjoy Cheeseman vs Fitzgerald as an appetiser for the main event.

It's easy to forget that Cheeseman is still only 24-years-old as he has already become a domestic title holder as well as challenging for the EBU crown against WBC No3 contender Sergio Garcia of Spain, a fight that showed up some technical flaws in the South Londoner's game. "The Big Cheese" as he is known was awarded a strange split decision draw in his last fight against Northampton's Kieron Conway, strange because he was at least 3 rounds up on most observers scorecards and yet the judges had it so much tighter with 116-113 for Cheeseman, 115-114 for Conway, and 114-114.

Ted Cheeseman
Ted Cheesman won the Lonsdale belt by outpointing Asinia Byfield in October 2018.

Cheeseman recently publicly admitted to a gambling addiction and the problems it had caused in his life, so perhaps his career has understandably suffered from the fallout.

Scott Fitzgerald's career took a huge leap when he beat ex-GB Squad star Anthony Fowler to take his unbeaten professional record and score an against the odds win in March at the Echo Arena in Fowler's hometown, Liverpool. The win was hard-fought, but while it showed a few flaws for Fowler to work on it also showed the heart and desire that Fitzgerald brings to his fights. He simply would not be beaten on the night, flooring the favourite in the 10th and final round to seal the win.

This is a fight that Cheeseman would have started a big favourite in before his defeat to Garcia, the draw with Conway, and his revelation of gambling addiction, but since then we have seen the rise of Fitzgerald to true championship status against Fowler. Fitzgerald is going to pose some big problems for the Bermondsey man.

I think we will see a new British Champion crowned after a hard-fought encounter.

Prediction: Scott Fitzgerald to win on points.
