Michael Conlan has that slightly unerring task of fighting an opponent with a good record that nobody really knows that much about. When original opponent Vladimir Nikitin dropped out due to injury, Conlan told American promoter Top Rank to "Find me the best possible opponent." With 5 weeks notice, Ruiz won't have any excuses regarding short notice, the fight will, however, be his first outside Argentina.
The 25-year-old Argentine looks a solid and well-schooled boxer, he is not a big puncher with 10 of his 21 wins coming by way of stoppage, but he is a rangy boxer who likes to take the ring centre and counter his opponents when they attack and then pressure them when they retreat. Ruiz has boxed exclusively as a super-bantamweight so will be giving away the natural weight advantage to the Belfast man.
Ruiz's August 2018 vacant WBC Latino silver Super-bantamweight title fight against Dominican Diego Luis Pichardo is on YouTube and Ruiz looks a solid performer, but it must be noted that Pichardo had an 18-16-1 record going into the bout so cannot be regarded as a high-quality opponent. Another YouTube offering is Ruiz's previous fight against Mexican Victor Trejo Garcia (16-7-1), the Mexican pressured Ruiz a little more than Pichardo, but lacked ideas and did not show the expected Mexican fighting style. Most of Ruiz's career opponents have been brought in to give him experience.
Michael "Mick" Conlan is a two-time Olympian and 11-0 as a professional. He trains in London under trainer Adam Booth and is promoted by Bob Arum's Top Rank. He looks a better fighter since moving to England to be coached by Booth who has had world title success with Andy Lee, David Haye, and Ryan Burnett.
Conlan's last fight against tough Mexican Ruben Garcia Hernandez (24-3-2) at Madison Square Garden in March showed the progress the Irishman has made. Hernandez has mixed with the likes of Filipino legend Nonito Donaire but didn't win a round against Conlan.
Preview: Ruiz is a good import with a fair record but I would be surprised to see him last into the second half of the fight. I'm going for a stoppage for Conlan in the first 4 rounds.
