British heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois did what was expected of him and finished Ebenezer Tetteh's hopes of taking the Commonwealth title back to Ghana with a 1st round knockout at the Royal Albert Hall in Kensington.
Dubois must surely now move on to bigger and better opposition. It is a proven path that promoter Frank Warren is moving his 21-year-old prospect along and he should not be pushed too soon into the top tier of world heavyweight boxing, but too many early knockouts can leave a fighter short on ring time and that can be a big problem later in their career when they meet someone that's used to their type of power. Going back many years, Frank Bruno much like Dubois was a knockout machine until he met "Bonecrusher" Smith and fell apart in the 10th and final round after winning the previous 9. To get those valuable rounds under your belt you have to face better opponents.
Joe Joyce will be contesting the vacant EBU title with Germany's former WBO cruiserweight world champion Marco Huck, so I'm sure at some time next year we will see Dubois vs Joyce with the British, Commonwealth and European title on the line. Joyce would be a massive step-up from the likes of Tetteh, for a start, Joyce has already beaten guys like Bermaine Stiverne, Alexander Ustinov, and Bryant Jennings so is probably well ahead of Dubois in terms of ring experience as a professional, but Joyce also has the amateur experience that can be invaluable.
Frank Warren won't be pushed with Dubois development, he's been here before, but he knows you have to let them off the leash at some stage and Dubois's power makes that time look like it's coming sooner rather than later.
