Danny Garcia the former WBC and WBA Super-lightweight and WBC Welterweight champion established himself as the top contender in the 147lb division with a sensational destruction job of tough gatekeeper Adrian Granados at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, on Saturday, April 20th.
The manner of Garcia's win demonstrates the danger he would be if given an opportunity against any of the titleholders. He has already run Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter close in the only defeats on his ledger and many fans must have been wondering if IBF champion Errol Spence Jr would have his hands full against the Philadelphian.
At 31 years of age, Garcia is probably at the peak of his abilities, so Granados who was stopped for the 1st time in his career met Garcia at the wrong time from his point of view.
With Thurman and Porter both looking beatable in their last title defences, Garcia has put himself in the minds of the fight fans as the guy that they want to see against Terence Crawford or Spence Jr if those two don't face each other soon.
Watching Garcia, it is sometimes difficult to work out what is so special about his game. He is not especially fast of hand and foot, but his distance control and timing are nothing short of exceptional. He is also an excellent defensive boxer who slips shots and counters naturally.
Spence Jr vs Garcia is an easy to make fight for Premier Boxing Champions and Fox Sports and could be a fight of the year candidate, so let's hope that common sense prevails and we see it happen.
